Online Master’s in Applied Behavior Analysis Complete List (2019-2020)
If you enjoy helping others and you want to make a positive impact on their lives, then you may want to consider studying applied behavior analysis. A master’s degree in Applied Behavior Analysis can be a stepping-stone to work in the field of ABA.
What Is ABA?
Applied Behavior Analysis is often simply abbreviated as ABA. Therapists have been using applied behavior analysis practices since research published by Allyon and Michael in 1959 showed promise when psychiatric nurses employed behavioral engineering techniques. Therapists and counselors that obtain their Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) certification often work with children and adults on the autism spectrum but there are many other fields that utilize ABA. ABA is a therapy that is based on exploring and scientifically learning facts about each patients’ personal environment.
Applied Behavior Analysis strives to improve patient behavior by positively impacting:
- How patients react in negative or disruptive situations
- Learning capabilities associated with memory skills, test taking, academics and focus
- Dismantling language barriers and increasing communication abilities
ABA therapy utilizes positive reinforcement to encourage patients to adapt and become more responsive to advancements in their therapy. ABA can be performed in home-based, school or office environments and each therapy is adaptive to meet the individuals’ personal needs.
ABA Masters Online Admissions Requirements
Depending upon the institution you are applying to and their requirements, you may need to complete various requirements before admission to a master’s program. First, you must achieve a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
Requirements for admissions may vary by program. Check with your intended program to confirm their requirements.
Master of Applied Behavior Analysis Curriculum
While curriculum may vary across programs, the standard curriculum follows what is called a Verified Course Sequence (VCS), originally managed by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board and now under the jurisdiction of the Association for Behavior Analysis International (ABAI). A program with a Verified Course Sequence is recommended for the BCBA certification but other coursework may also be acceptable, depending upon verification by the BACB. Always check with your state and the BACB for questions regarding your specific situation.
Typical curriculum includes courses in biological foundations of behavior, practical training and a research/thesis component. Coursework will apply theory and practice.
The actual curriculum and credit requirements will vary based on the institution.
Do You Need A Graduate Record Exam for an Online ABA Master’s Program?
The (GRE) Graduate Record Exam is sometimes required to advance into the ABA therapy program but it is not always necessary. The GRE is a standardized test that most colleges within the USA administer and require for admissions but not all schools utilize this test.
